Matthias Humer

Videnskabelig assistent

Matthias Humer is a Ph.D. fellow at the University of Copenhagen working on Security Studies, Gender and Visual Global Politics within the research initiative “Bodies as Battleground: Gender Images and International Security”, led by Professor Lene Hansen. He has a master's degree in International Security from Sciences Po Paris and a bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Vienna.

His Ph.D. research deals with theorising how security threats are constituted through images. The project investigates how gender matters in understanding war and (in)security. To this end, the research analyses how gender norms are reproduced or challenged in war photography, working with photography from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Matthias has fieldwork experience from research stays in Brussels and North Macedonia, where he conducted interviews on the protection of minority groups in the context of post-conflict reconstruction and European integration for his Master’s thesis.

His supervisor is Lene Hansen.
