This article is written for the special issue on European Studies and reflects on 45 years of theorising contemporary Europe, within the context of broader developments in the social sciences. What is immediately clear to anyone reading this article, the Journal of Contemporary European Studies, Journal of  Common Market Studies, Journal of European Public Policy, Journal of European Integration, or any of the many other established journals of contemporary or any of the many other established journals of contemporary Europe, is that there is no ‘European theory'. And perhaps there should not be.
