Maja Zehfuss researches the politics of making migrants. Her work examines hierarchies of political subjectivity and their impact on contemporary global politics in the context of migration. She is particularly interested in temporality, memory and ethics. She has previously also worked on war, the idea of humanity, vulnerability, refusing and the question of the international.

She co-edits the successful textbook Global Politics: A New Introduction, now in its third edition, and has published three research monographs with Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press.  Her most recent book, War and the Politics of Ethics (OUP 2018), received an honourable mention for the BISA Susan Strange Book Prize.

Maja joined the University of Copenhagen in 2021. She has previously taught at the University of Warwick and The University of Manchester, where she is still an Honorary Professor. She received her doctorate from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Post-Compulsory Education (Higher Education) from the University of Warwick.

Maja Zehfuss is the co-founder of the British International Studies Association Poststructural Politics Working Group which she co-convened from 2001 to 2007. She has served on the executive of the British International Studies Association and on the Governing Council of the International Studies Association. From 2012 to 2017 was Associate Dean for Postgraduate Research in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Manchester. 

A previous Chair of the editorial committee of Manchester University Press and co-editor of Review of International Studies, she serves on the boards of the Journal of International Relations and Development, of Critical Studies on Security and of Cooperation and Conflict. She is the Chair of the John Ruggie ISA Best Book Prize Committee for 2023-2024 and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of the United Kingdom.

Maja has supervised 15 PhD students to completion and currently supervises Nijat Eldarov, Lily Lin and Maevia Griffiths.
